Reference frames in language and cognition: cross-population mismatches

چکیده
Abstract Numerous studies have found evidence of a speech community’s referential practices in discourse being predictive its members’ behavior nonverbal tasks. In this article, we discuss series exceptions to alignment pattern, drawing on data from eleven populations Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North and Central America, Oceania. These not been discussed conjunction with one another striking commonalities across findings these gone unnoticed: (a) discourses referring small-scale space, either intrinsic frame use is dominant or both relative geocentric frames are used frequently addition frames; (b) recall/recognition memory, coding more common than egocentric (in tasks that involve stationary stimulus configurations) nine populations, while remaining two, there extensive even cognition. We light Haun’s innate geocentrism hypothesis (Haun, D. B. M., C. Rapold, J. Call, G. Janzen & S. Levinson. 2006. Cognitive cladistics cultural override hominid spatial Proceedings National Academy Sciences 103(46). 17568–17573). Our offers partial support for hypothesis, but simultaneously calls into question whether any extrinsic reference available innately.

Frames of reference in social cognition.
How is mindreading affected by social context? It is often implicitly assumed that there is one single way to understand others, whatever the situation or the identity of the person. In contrast, I emphasize the duality of functions of mindreading depending on the context (social interaction and social observation), as well as the duality of social frames of reference (egocentric and allocentri...
متن کاملFrames of reference in spatial language acquisition
Languages differ in how they encode spatial frames of reference. It is unknown how children acquire the particular frame-of-reference terms in their language (e.g., left/right, north/south). The present paper uses a word-learning paradigm to investigate 4-year-old English-speaking children's acquisition of such terms. In Part I, with five experiments, we contrasted children's acquisition of nov...
متن کاملLanguage and spatial frames of reference in mind and brain.
Some language communities routinely use allocentric reference directions (e.g. 'uphill-downhill') where speakers of European languages would use egocentric references ('left-right'). Previous experiments have suggested that the different language groups use different reference frames in non-linguistic tasks involving the recreation of oriented arrays. However, a recent paper argues that manipul...
متن کاملSocial Cognition of Gender and Language
The question, Do men and women use language differently played a central part in the emergence of feminist socio linguistics more than two decades ago, and it casts a long shadow. This paper focuses on the literature that has contributed to the understanding of the major research questions underlying two major strands, language and gender, concentrating on the development of the literature from...
متن کاملFrames of reference in spatial memories acquired from language.
Four experiments examined reference systems in spatial memories acquired from language. Participants read narratives that located 4 objects in canonical (front, back, left, right) or noncanonical (left front, right front, left back, right back) positions around them. Participants' focus of attention was first set on each of the 4 objects, and then they were asked to report the name of the objec...
